Trade Compliance - The accidental career

The accidental career.

How did you get into trade compliance?

It’s a question I ask almost every trade compliance professional I speak to.

And more often than not, the answer used to be the same…

“I fell into it.”

Very few people intentionally started their careers in export controls, sanctions, or trade compliance. For many, it began in adjacent areas — logistics, customs, legal, supply chain — and evolved from there.

In some cases, particularly in the US, I’ve seen engineers move into trade compliance roles following consent agreements, where companies were required to build out or strengthen their compliance functions quickly.

But that’s starting to change.

We’re now seeing more structured entry points into trade compliance, with graduates and early-career professionals actively choosing this path from the outset.

And it makes sense.

Trade compliance today sits at the intersection of regulation, geopolitics, and global business. It’s become a critical function for companies operating internationally — and demand for experienced professionals continues to grow.

What was once a niche, accidental career is now:

• A clearly defined career path

• Increasingly strategic within organisations

• And, in many cases, highly rewarding

It’s also a space where professionals can build genuinely global careers.

So I’m curious — for those already in the field, was it an accident or a deliberate choice?
